Is RAM Dodge?

2021 Ram TRX

Many Minot drivers ask us about the relationship between Dodge and RAM. Is RAM Dodge?Who owns RAM?We’re here to help. Dodge became a brand way back in 1900, and by 1914, they began their journey into truck manufacturing. Though the name was also lent to the Ramcharger SUV and Dodge RAM van, the popular “Dodge RAM” trucks became increasingly popular for their exceptional performance and capabilities.

RAM remained within the Dodge umbrella for years, but business changes saw an eventual split between the two. Now RAM and Dodge are separate brands. Keep reading to learn more about the long history of the Dodge and RAM relationship.

When Did Dodge and RAM Split?

In 1981, Chrysler bought Dodge and kept their most popular models. This included the best-selling Dodge RAM pickup trucks. From the model year 1981 to 2009, RAM trucks were known as “Dodge RAM” trucks. But then, right before the start of a new decade, RAM trucks split from the general Dodge lineup and became their own separate lineup.

Who Owns RAM?

Chrysler made RAM a standalone brand in 2009, but it is still part of the Dodge company. So while Chrysler is the parent company of both brands, Dodge and RAM are still part of the same family. Dodge is the name for the cars, SUVs, and minivans within the lineup. RAM is the name for the pickup truck lineup.

Why Did Dodge and RAM Split?

So, what was the reason for RAM and Dodge to split? The two brands became separate lineups to allow for better specialization and innovation. The Dodge line created new models with stronger performance to compete head-to-head with the Jeep Wrangler and Chevy Corvette, while the RAM took on the popular pickup truck segment and diversified with different models and greater capabilities.
