How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires?

Mechanic with Tires

Just how often should you rotate your tires? Usually, the recommended interval for how many miles to rotate tires is between 5,000 – 8,000 miles. The reality, though, is that you’ll want to check this against what’s listed in your vehicle’s owner’s manual. Ready to learn more? Rotating Tires on FWD and RWD Vehicles

Front-wheel drive (FWD) and rear-wheel drive (RWD) are two types of vehicle drivetrains. Both are subtypes of two wheel drive (2WD). Each differs from the other based on which axle, or set of wheels, power is sent to.

For a front-wheel drive car, power is sent to the front tires. For a rear-wheel drive car it is sent to the rear tires.

For FWD or RWD cars, tire rotation needs to be performed every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Be sure to consult your owner’s manual for more specific figures. Here is more information to keep in mind:

  • Trying to complete a FWD tire rotation yourself? Just remember to flip switch sides when moving the rear tires. For instance, the rear right tire should go on the front left side. However, when moving the front tires to the back, keep them on the same side.
  • When rotating tires on an RWD car, reverse the above steps. In other words, switch sides when moving the front tires to the back, but keep the rear tires on the same side when you move them to the front.
  • Pro Tip: how you drive, (off-roading, racing, aggressive driving vs. gentle driving, etc) does affect how often you will need to rotate your tires. Contact our service experts for more information.

AWD Tire Rotation Tips

If you have an all-wheel drive (AWD) vehicle then your vehicle will require tire rotation patterns and intervals that differ from FWD and RWD cars.

With AWD vehicles, tire rotation will need to be performed in a very specific pattern and more frequently. Most AWD tires need to be rotated every 3,000 – 5,000 miles You’ll also want to keep these tips in mind when rotating your tires on an AWD vehicle:

  1. The left rear goes to the right front spot.
  2. The right rear goes to the left front spot.
  3. The right front goes to the left rear spot.
  4. The left front goes to the right rear spot.
